Ludo is the board game of four colours, four tokens each and a lot of shouting when someone gets captured a square from home. It's a cousin of Parcheesi, and in India it's practically a national pastime, played on cloth boards, on phones and on long train journeys.

This version puts each player on their own phone, in the same room or not. You roll and tap the token you want to move, and the board updates for everyone at once. The app knows the rules, so there are no debates about safe squares or whether a capture earns another roll.

Two to four people can play. Hosts can keep it classic or add house rules many families already use: a quick start with one token out, letting a 1 open a token, or walls that block the track. It's a good fit for cousins, flatmates and anyone who takes board games a little too seriously.

How to play

  1. 1

    Setting up

Two to four players join, each on their own phone, and get a colour with four tokens in their yard. The host picks the house rules before starting.
  2. 2

    Getting a token out

Roll a 6 to bring a token out of your yard onto your start square. With A 1 also opens a token on, a 1 works too, though only a 6 gives another roll. With Quick start on, everyone begins with one token already out.
  3. 3

    Moving

Tap the token you want to move. Each token goes once round the board, up your coloured home column and into home, which needs the exact roll. With Move automatically on, the app moves for you when there's only one possible move.
  4. 4

    Capturing and safe squares

Land on a rival's token and it goes back to their yard. Stars and start squares are safe: nobody can be captured there.
  5. 5

    Extra rolls

A 6, a capture or getting a token home earns another roll. Three 6s in a row loses the turn.
  6. 6

    Walls

With walls on, two of your tokens on the same square (other than a safe one) form a wall that nobody else can pass, land on or capture.
  7. 7

    Winning

Get all four tokens home. The host can end the game when the first player finishes, or play on for places until everyone is ranked.
  8. 8

    Timer and leaving

With a turn timer (15, 30, 45 or 60 seconds), the die rolls itself when time runs out and a move is made: a capture first, then a token reaching home, then a token coming out of the yard, otherwise the furthest token. The host can also skip a turn. A player who leaves has their tokens taken off the board, and if only one player is left, the game ends.

Hosting tips

  • Quick start and A 1 also opens both cut down the slow opening where everyone waits for a six.
  • Set the game to end at the first player home if you're short on time. Playing for places keeps everyone in until the end.
  • Leave Move automatically on for younger players; it saves a tap whenever there's only one choice.
  • Ludo is for four at most. With a bigger crowd, start a second game or pair up and share a phone.

Questions

Is this Ludo game free?

Yes. It's free, with no app to install.

Do we need an app to play Ludo online with friends?

No. Everyone plays in their phone's browser after signing in with Google.

How many can play?

2 to 4 players, each on their own phone.

Can we put the board on a TV?

Yes. The waiting room has a TV link that shows the board on any big screen with a browser. It's optional.

Do sixes give another roll?

Yes, and so do captures and bringing a token home. Three 6s in a row lose the turn.

Which squares are safe?

The stars and the start squares. A token sitting there can't be captured.

Can we play with house rules?

Yes. The host can switch on Quick start, let a 1 open a token, turn on walls, and choose whether the game ends at the first finisher or plays on for places.

What if a player wanders off?

Set a turn timer and the die rolls itself and makes a sensible move for them. The host can also skip a turn.
